Despite ‘quality’ being a very common & well-known term, many people or sectors still have their own definition for it. Typical definitions range from “fitness for use” to “conformance to requirements” and everything in between. At Methologic we define quality as the “degree to which inherent item characteristics fulfill stakeholder needs”. An item is any process element such as a product, process, facility or organization.
If the item’s inherent characteristics meet the stakeholder needs, the stakeholder’s perception of the item will be perceived of having good quality. When stakeholders have a positive perception of quality, they will be willing to offer rewards, spread the word in their network and come back in the future for more business. Meeting stakeholders needs as efficiently as possible is what ‘Lean’ is all about. Doing it repetitively with little variation is what ‘Six Sigma’ is all about. Lean Six Sigma simply combines the best of both worlds all in one. Some things in life are really simple, right?
Probability & statistics is an intertwined field of expertise that typically forms a barrier for many organizations & individuals in managing quality. These organizations and/or individuals either fear & avoid these topics, or they fully embrace them and go all the way.
